On this episode of Work-Life, host Eric Dickmann talks with Mark Colgan. Mark is an entrepreneur and revenue leader responsible for increasing revenue across a small portfolio of companies where he leverages his 13 years of experience in B2B Sales, Marketing, and Recruitment. He currently splits his time as Co-founder of Speak On Podcasts, mentoring B2B Startups via GrowthMentor and ScaleWise, The Product Onboarders, and coaching 100’s of SDRs through his Outbound Prospecting course via The Sales Impact Academy. Colgan is a Techstars 18′ Alumni and a regular speaker within the B2B SaaS industry, his work has been published by SaaStock, Mailshake, Pipedrive, LeadSift, Lemlist, SugarCRM, and Baremetrics to name a few.
Work
Mark Colgan has been working for 13 years, mainly in B2B sales and marketing but with experience and training in HR, account management, and internal recruitment as well. At the time, digital marketing was relatively new so Mark taught himself the skills and led his company's marketing efforts by building out the organization's automation and CRM technology. After gaining this valuable experience in the corporate world, he decided to branch out on his own. He worked as a MarTech consultant for various Saas companies and while the pay was good, he quickly learned it was hard to offer his services for every platform out there and it was best to pick a niche market to serve. In his search for companies that needed his expertise, he discovered TaskDrive. TaskDrive is a lead research and data enrichment service and was searching for someone to optimize their processes and bring in new sales. Mark grabbed the opportunity and served as a General Manager for the company.
As the world of podcasting boomed, Mark saw an opportunity and his path crossed with Jakub Zajicek who had a similar vision. They decided to team up instead of going it alone and in June 2020, they co-founded Speak On Podcasts. This agency helps connect podcast guests with show hosts. In his partnership with Jakub, Mark shared that each co-founder plays a different role. Jakub is more the visionary while Mark acts as the implementer and builder of the processes and systems. He prefers to work with people who complement his skills and have different strengths and weaknesses.
Life
In his personal life, Mark is a digital nomad. He likes the ultimate freedom of working wherever he wants to and running his own business. He has been living this digital nomad kind of life for over three and a half years now. Currently, he’s based in Lisbon after getting out of the UK before Brexit was finalized. Mark loves observing different cultures in the various places he has been to including Italy, Portugal, Spain, and the Philippines.
Balance
Mark enjoys wandering through cities and taking new routes around town because he often finds his best and craziest ideas as he walks down new paths. He intentionally ventures out in new directions to discover interesting restaurants, bars, and places he has never seen before. He also loves playing golf, running, cycling, going to the gym, and building stuff.
As you’d expect, Mark loves listening to marketing, sales, and agency-building-related podcasts. Some of his favorite classic books are- “How to Win Friends & Influence People” by Dale Carnegie, “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill, and “Scientific Advertising” by Claude Hopkins. Colgan is a fan of comedy. He admits that some of his guilty pleasures are listening to My Dad Wrote a Porno podcast and The Ricky Gervais Show hosted by Ricky Gervais, Karl Pilkington, and Stephen Merchant.
Colgan lives by two mottos- “Always be connecting” and “Por qué no,” which in English means- “Why not?”
